Registration for the 2008-2009 season will be held on September 19 & 21; please see the Calendar

For Austinmer Orcas to continue to function successfully, we need the ongoing support of all parents. Activity Days, and all the events in them, can only be run with the support and help of lots of parents. In joining Austinmer Surf Life Saving Club parents and Orcas are making a commitment to ensuring each season is a success.

When registering for Orcas, each parent or guardian is required to commit to a task during the season. This can vary depending on skills and qualifications.

Parents can become age managers, event coordinators, water safety officers or gear and club house workers. Unless nominated at registration, adult members will be rostered to do either club house/gear maintenance or assist age managers for the season.

Age Managers

Age managers spend each activity day morning on the beach supervising our young Orcas. They are the ones in fluoro-green t-shirts encouraging and recording the efforts of our nippers. An age manager's training course is run at the beginning of each season to explain the responsibilities of this role. We need at least 4 age managers per age group to run Orcas successfully. If there are not enough age managers per group some Orca groups will not be able to participate.

Event Managers

Event managers set up the beach activities on each activity day day, and supervise the running of these activities for each participating age group. They also pack away all equipment used at the end of the morning activities.

Water Captain

The Water Captain is one of the most important jobs for the season. The Water Captain assesses surf conditions and determines what activities can be safely held in the surf. The Water Captain also supervisors water safety officers and each activity in the surf.

Beach Captain

The Beach Captain like the Water Captain is an important job in the co-ordination and safety of the Orca Activity Days. The Beach Captain is in charge of the smooth operation of the events on the beach. Austinmer Beach is a very popular, though quite small beach. During the season the beach can become very crowded and ensuring that Orcas events are coordinated but do not disturb the enjoyment of others on the beach is a key task.

Water Safety Officers

All events held in the water (both in the rockpools and the surf) must be fully supervised by parents who hold a bronze surf lifesaving award. These parents wear orange caps and spend each Orcas activity day morning in the water supervising children swimming and on boards. Bronze surf lifesaving training for parents is held each season.

Equipment supervisors

A wide range of equipment is used all over the beach at each Orcas activity day morning. The role of equipment supervisors is to make sure this equipment returns to the club house, and that the equipment is kept in good order ready for the next Orcas activity day.

Program coordinators

On any activity day morning we may have up to 200 children to supervise and run through a series of activities designed to build their surf awareness skills. To achieve this on an already crowded beach takes a huge amount of organisation. The program coordinators provide age managers with an activities guide each Orcas activity day morning, making sure that everyone stays busy and that no-one is kept waiting for their turn.

BBQ Helpers

Our sausage sizzle is held at the end of each activity morning and is both an important fundraiser for the club and a social event for Orcas and their families. We need willing hands able to coordinate the shopping for the BBQ, and to cook and serve our hordes of hungry and thirsty Orcas.

Club house duty

Austinmer Surf Life Saving Club does not employ a cleaner. During the season most families will be asked to assist in keeping the club house clean. Although Orcas are not allowed to use the hot showers, the wet areas can become very sandy after an Orcas Activity Day. There will be a roster for each Activity Day where parents and Orcas will be required to hose out the wet areas and vacuum the main club house area.

Clothing sales

All Orcas are easily identified on the beach by their specially designed rash vests, swimsuits and caps. The Clothing Coordinator ensures the ready supply of this clothing, and relies on parent help to run a sales table in the club house each Orcas activity day.

Committee members

By becoming involved in the Orcas committee, you'll be contributing to the overall decision making for the club. There are a number of committee roles available including Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Water Captain, Beach Captain, Registrar, Branch Delegate and Carnival Organiser. Meetings are held each alternate Monday evening from 7pm in the club house. See the Calendar for details.
