Eligibility

To be eligible to join Orcas, a child must be at least 5 years of age and under 14 years of age on 30 September 2008. This date is the policy of Surf Life Saving Australia and also determines the age group your child is placed in. For instance, a child who is 5 on this date will be in the 'Under 6' group, a child who is 6 on this date will be in the 'Under 7' group etc.

An Orca membership must be sponsored by a financial adult member of the Austinmer Surf Life Saving Club, usually a parent or guardian. Parents are actively encouraged to become involved in the Club (see Being involved). Adults can join as associate or active members.

Active members must hold a minimum of a surf bronze life saving medallion and be tested for their proficiency each year. These members must complete a set number of hours per season. These hours can be earned either by being in a surf patrol during the season or by being a water safety officer or both.

Associate members are not required to patrol the beach, though they may hold a bronze medallion or higher and can participate in surf activities.

Cadet membership is open to 15-19 year olds. Cadets can participate in patrols or Orca water safety activities, though they must hold either a surf life saving proficiency certificate or a bronze medallion (must be over 15 to train for a bronze medallion).

Membership of Austinmer Surf Life Saving Club entitles you to use the club's facilities including showers, gym equipment (adults only) and discounted hire of the hall. Orcas committee meetings are held in the club house on alternate Monday's beginning at 7pm during the season. (See details on the Calendar page)

Caps$15
Rash vests$40
Boys swimmers$28
Girls swimmers (full piece & 2 piece)$45

Rookie Surf Life Saver Program

The Rookie program provides a transition between nipper participation and the senior club. The Rookies are usually drawn from Under 14 and Under 15 age groups and participants must show a commitment to continue their surf life saving education and training. Rookies undertake a range of recognised SLS awards including resuscitation, surf rescue, radio officer or IRB crew certificates. Rookies are usually required to patrol. Check out the Rookies page for more information.
